COMPUTER APPLICATION SKILLS REQUIRED FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT AMONG BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITIES FOR FUTURE BUSINESSES

Abstract


The study sought to determine the computer application skills required for entrepreneurship development among Business Education students in public universities in Ebonyi State for future businesses. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The study was guided by three research questions and three null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance. Population of the study comprised of 294 respondents (22 Business Education lecturers in public universities in Ebonyi State that offer the programme and 272 registered small and medium enterprises in Abakaliki metropolis). There was no sample because the population was manageable. A 17 item structured questionnaire validated by two experts in the field of Business Education and one expert in measurement and evaluation was used for the study. The reliability of the instrument, using Cronbach alpha yielded an overall reliability co-efficient of 0.74. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test. Findings showed that internet application skills, spreadsheet application skills, and database management application skills were required by Business Education students for entrepreneurship development. The researcher then concluded that Business Education students who want to develop entrepreneurship competencies for future businesses should be equipped with adequate computer application skills such as internet, spreadsheet, and database management since computer application skills have taken over every facet of business. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that government should equip Business Education departments in various universities with computers and internet facilities to enable the lecturers empower the students with the necessary skills required for entrepreneurship development and future businesses
