BENEFIT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELIGENCE AND ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS FOR BUSINESS EDUCATION PROGRAMME IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN DELTA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract


The study explored the benefit of artificial intelligence and ethical implications for Business Education Programme in tertiary institutions in Delta State, Nigeria. Two research questions guided the study and two null hypotheses were formulated and tested. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. The population of the study consisted of two thousand six hundred and fifty (2,650) business education students registered for the 2021/2022 academic session from colleges of education and universities in Delta State. Simple random sampling technique was used to obtain a sample size of 350, comprising 150 college students and 200 university students. A 20 item statement questionnaire that was validated by three research experts was used for data collection. The reliability of the instrument was ensured using test re-test technique and data obtained were analyzed using Cronbach alpha statistics. The analysis yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.79 which was suitable for the study. Data collected from the research questions were analyzed using mean and standard deviation while the independent sample t-test was used to test the hypotheses at a significance level of 0.05.The findings of the study revealed that AI-empowered systems facilitate personalized-learning, enable adaptive learning and real-time feedbacks on learning progression. However, AI ethical concerns in education were identified to include but not limited to: data privacy and security, algorithmic bias, unfairness, among others. Based on the findings, the study recommends that AI- technology developers and regulatory bodies should ensure that viable data privacy policies are established to protect and safeguard personal information and that surveillance mechanism embedded in AI‟s predictive systems should be automated for prompt identification of learning patterns and areas of improvement, also that AI-algorithmic systems should be carefully designed for equitable access to data, avoid inequalities that could cause socio-economic disparities and educational gap.
