Abstract


The study appraised the standard of performance of Higher National Diploma (HND) students on timed writings in Keyboarding. The study made use of the timed writings of 45 graded scripts for Advanced Desktop Publishing of the Department of Office Technology and Management, the Federal Polytechnic, Idah, Kogi State. The examination was conducted in April in respect of 2011/2012 First Semester Examinations. Two research questions were answered on the standard of performance on the timed writings based on the number of words per minute (wam) achieved. Data generated were analysed using descriptive statistics (mode and mean). The results revealed a wide gap in the standard of performance with only 21 wam as the mean against the required speed of 50 wam. It was recommended that a holistic approach at problem solving be employed to
redress the dismal performance in keyboarding.
