ISSUES IN EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT: IMPLICATION FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING IN BUSINESS EDUCATION IN THE NIGER DELTA
Abstract
The study investigated issues in evaluation and assessment: implication for effective teaching and learning in business education. Two research questions were posed to guide the study and one hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The entire population of 138 was studied by the researcher and no sample was drawn. Data for this study were collected by means of questionnaire titled “Issues in Evaluation and Assessment: Implication for Effective Teaching and Learning in Business Education (IEAIETLBE)’’. A total of 125 lecturers who returned their instrument were studied. The questionnaire adopted a modified four point Likert scale. Test-retest method was used for the reliability test, while the validity test yielded reliability co-efficient of 0.89.
Mean rating and standard deviation were used to analyse the research questions while t-test for large group mean was used to test the hypothesis. Findings revealed that adequate and periodical evaluation and assessment is necessary for effective teaching and learning in business education. There is also the need for active teaching and learning, non-misapplication of continuous assessment,
adequate learning system, effective programme monitoring and evaluation for effective teaching and learning in business education. Based on the findings, discussions were made and conclusions drawn, recommendations made amongst which were that there should be formation of policy guidelines for achieving national uniformity in evaluation and assessment across business education programmes and capacity building in evaluation and assessment at all levels should be a priority.
