SKILLS ACQUISITION AS CORRELATE TO DECENT WORK IN DIGITAL ERA AMONG BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN AKWA IBOM STATE
Abstract
This study investigated skills acquisition as correlate to decent work in digital era among business education students in tertiary institutions in Akwa Ibom State. Three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a correlational design. The population of the study comprised 625 business education students from tertiary institutions that offer business education programme in Akwa Ibom State. Purposive sampling techniques was used to select final year students from the tertiary institutions comprising 46 business education students from University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State and 130 students from Akwa Ibom State College of education Afaha-Nsit making the sample size for the study to be 176 business education students. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach alpha method which yielded an index of 0.79, and 0.78 for cluster 1 and 2 respectively. The data was analyzed using Pearson Moment Correlation Coefficient to answer the research questions while Linear Regression Analysis was used to test the null hypothesis at .05 level of significance. Findings showed that there is a high correlation between skills acquisition and decent work in digital era among business education students. It was further revealed that the coefficient of relationship between skills acquisition and decent work in digital era was significant. The researchers concluded that the government needs to provide adequate number of physical and material resources to business education programme in tertiary institutions in Awka Ibom State. Based on the findings, it was recommended that entrepreneurship courses should be given priorities in the time table schedule of business education programme to enable students acquire entrepreneurship skills for self and decent work on graduation. ICT skills should be included in the curriculum of business education to enable students acquire the skills needed so as to make them employable and decent work upon graduation.
