ETHICAL ISSUES IN THE USAGE OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES AMONG STUDENTS OF BUSINESS EDUCATION IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS
Abstract
The emergence of new technologies popularly called ICT has forced educators to think differently about the way learning occurs. The development and expansion of new technologies has been a dominant trend in teaching and learning environments for over a decade. In fact, it encourages students’ active engagement, collaboration, and participation in class activities and group work and provides a flow of information dissemination in a sophisticated method that yields measurable results. Since stone-age it has been noted that the tools developed for ethical use have been misused by the people and is evidenced in the rate of Internet fraud, popularly called yahoo yahoo, ranges from email
scams, hacking, data theft, cheating others of their hard earned money, online financial scams, web jacking, cyber defamation, manipulating data, credit card fraud, internet marriage, on-line gambling and impersonation among others to the extent that it has undermine confidence in the digital economy. Unethical behaviour is not restricted to office workers alone but has been found to be
prevalent among business education students in tertiary institutions. Such students are addicted to storing information in the memory of their handset using concealed earpieces to listen to the information pre-recorded in their mobile phone when the examinations is going on; the Internet is accessed through the mobile phone, material is viewed on an MP 4, which stores video clips as well as sound. Outsiders may be contacted to text or emailed some answers to their mobile phone when the examination is going on. The paper therefore concludes that each organization, School libraries (especially e-library), cafes and laboratories should prepare ethical codes that would be binding on all end users of ICT and provisions should be made for their enforcement. Although, enforcement of such codes may not be easy, but mere existence of such codes in our institutions of higher learning will go a long way in reducing unethical usage of new technologies.
