EXTENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRAINTS TO EFFECTIVE USE OF COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTION AMONG BUSINESS EDUCATORS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN ANAMBRA STATE

Abstract

Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) as an interactive technique that makes use of computers to enhance the teaching and learning process is expected to impact positively on business students’ performance in academics and the world of work. However, this is not without some constraints in its utilization. This study is aimed at ascertaining the extent of environmental constraints that impede effective use of CAI among business educators in tertiary Institutions in Anambra state. The study was a descriptive survey conducted with 50 business educators, purposively sampled from four public tertiary institutions that offer business education programme in Anambra State. One research question guided the conduct of the study and one null hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance. A validated structured questionnaire, with a reliability coefficient of 0.81 was used for data collection. The data collected were analyzed using mean scores and t-test statistic. The findings of the study revealed among others that energy crisis; inadequate financial resources available to institutions for provision of adequate computers and allied facilities, constrain effective use of CAI among business educators in tertiary Institutions in Anambra institutions, to a very high extent. It was concluded that all the constraints identified poses tertiary challenges at moderate, high and very high extents. It was
recommended among others that institutional management and programme administrators in business education should partner with ICT firms and allied organizations in the provision of computers, also in the training of business educators to constantly upgrade their ICT pedagogical skills for effective
use of CAI.
