HUMAN AND MATERIAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING/LEARNING OF BUSINESS STUDIES IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KWARA STATE

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the human and material resources needed for effective teaching of business studies in junior secondary schools within Ilorin metropolis of Kwara state. The study used some selected schools in the three Local government areas that make up Ilorin metropolis of Kwara state. This was to determine whether the needed human and material resources are
adequate for effective teaching of business studies. An instrument (questionnaire) tagged Human and Material needs/resources Assessment scale (HMAS) was used to collect data from respondents. The reliability coefficient was determined by using Pearson’s Production Movement correlation. A reliability value of 0.74 obtained was considered appropriate. One hundred and two junior secondary schools constitute the population of the study. Out of this a sample of eighteen schools with population of 360 students were selected. Descriptive statistics of percentages were used to answer the research questions and Chi-square was used to test the null hypotheses. The result showed that the available human and material resources were not adequate for effective teaching of business studies in secondary schools. It was recommended that government should make adequate provision of all the resources needed in schools. Where such was lacking, schools head, teachers and other relevant authorities should improvise.
